Purple Heart Box
I made this box to honor and commemorate recipients of the military’s Purple Heart (PH) medal, which is awarded to service members wounded or killed in action. Appropriately, the body of the box is made from purpleheart wood, which symbolizes the medal in both name and color. The exterior of the medal is framed with gold, so I added yellow splines made from canarywood to represent that element. Lastly, the interior of the medal bears a golden profile of George Washington. Therefore, every aspect of this box’s interior, from the solid brass hinges to the canarywood trays, bear a golden color to embody that aspect.
Recipients of Purple Heart medal have scars that tell their story. I felt it was fitting to let this box keep it’s scars as well. They’re minor things that I would fix or remove on any other piece. But given the intention behind this box, I thought it was important to show that you don’t need to be perfect to be beautiful.
The body of the box was made from a single piece of wood, allowing the grain to wrap continuously around all 4 sides. The splines, while symbolic, also serve to reinforce the mitered corners. And the profile of the lid and base mirror one another, drawing your attention into the box.
Outer Dimensions: 11-7/8” x 8-7/8” x 8”
Interior Dimensions: 9-1/2” x 6-1/2” x 6-13/16”
